Hofstra Cheerleaders Win UCA National Competition

Fifth national title for Hofstra’s Cheer Team

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – Hofstra University’s Small Co-Ed Cheerleading Team has taken top honors at the 2010 Universal Dance Association (UDA)/Universal Cheer Association (UCA) National Competition at Disney World, Orlando, FL. For more than a decade, the Pride Cheerleaders have been ranked among the nation's top 10 teams. Previously, they won the Small Co-ed Championship title in 2003, 2006, 2007, and 2009. The Cheer Team also placed second in the All Girl Partner Stunts division.

“I could not be more proud of this competition team. They have overcome so much adversity this year and they were determined to defend their National title,” said Cheerleading Coach Christine Farina. “Their accomplishments have far exceeded the accomplishments of any team I have ever coached. The team received 1st place on their Qualification tape, won a Back to Back National Championship, and most importantly, hit the most difficult and creative routine we have ever choreographed. They left their heart out there in their performance and it definitely paid off."

To prepare for Nationals the team practiced twice-a-day all through the January break, compared to their typical practice schedule of three to four times a week. The team that was chosen to compete at nationals is comprised of the cheer program's most elite group of 12 women and four men out of the total 24 members.

Hofstra’s Dance Team, which also competed at Disney World, placed fourth in Division I Jazz and in the top 10 in the UDA Division 1 Hip Hop category.  The Dance Team has developed into one of the premier college dance programs in the United States. It has been nationally ranked for more than a decade and in the top five in their categories for 10 of those years.
