Hofstra University Celebrates Black History Month

An Art Exhibit, a Multicultural film, a Harlem Renaissance Tour and a Poetry Slam highlight Black History Month at Hofstra

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY - Hofstra University will celebrate Black History Month with a number of multi-cultural events that pay tribute to the contributions that African Americans have made to society.

"Black history is American history. This month is a dynamic opportunity for Hofstra students and University community members to expand and deepen their knowledge of the African Diaspora,” said Assistant Director of Multicultural and International Student Programs Pamela Phayme. “The Black History Month program calendar features a wide variety of programs exploring elements of African, African American, and Caribbean culture; there’s truly something for everyone!"

The first celebration of Black history occurred February 12, 1926 when American Historian Carter G.Woodson established Black History Week to remember and celebrate the positive contributions to our nation made by people of African heritage. In 1976 the week was expanded into Black History Month.

Some Black History Month events are free and open to the public. For more information please visit the Web site at www.hofstra.edu or call 516-463-6796.
