"THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES"

Performance of Eve Ensler's production benefits the movement to end violence against women

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY - The Hofstra University Association for Women in Communications presents Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues. Ticket sales will benefit V-Day, a global movement to end violence against women and girls.

 Performances will be held at the Monroe Lecture Center Theater, Hofstra University, South Campus on Friday, February 23, 2007 and Saturday, February 24, 2007 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, February 25, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. Specifically, profits from the performances will benefit the Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Voices of Women Organizing Project, which gives a voice to survivors of domestic abuse by fighting for quicker action against these crimes. 

The Vagina Monologues is an award-winning episodic play which premiered Off-Broadway in 1996 and has since swept the nation and is frequently performed on college campuses. The play is a collection of monologues performed by various women who share their views about their vaginas. The monologues also convey women's stories of intimacy, vulnerability, and sexual self-discovery. 

For V-Day 2007 Even Ensler has added monologues to the production. Hofstra's performance will include "The Memory of Her Face" and "Under the Burqa." Ensler's Spotlight 2007 monologue focuses on women in conflict zones.

The V-Day movement promotes creative events and performances such as this one to increase awareness, raise money, and aide existing anti-violence organizations. The organization, V-Day,which stands for Victory, Valentine and Vagina, also stages large-scale benefits and produces innovative gatherings, films and campaigns to educate and change social attitudes towards violence against women. Since its' first year of incorporation in 2001, the V-Day movement has raised more than $30 million.
