Hofstra Presents "The Vagina Monologues" Benefiting Women in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra University VDay Production Club presents Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues to benefit a global campaign aimed at ending crimes against women and girls in Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Performances will be at 8 p.m. the Monroe Lecture Center Theater, Hofstra University, South Campus from Thursday, February 26 through Saturday, February 28, 2009.

“Stop Raping our Greatest Resource: Power to Women in the DRC” is a new global campaign to call attention to the horrible crimes committed against women and girls in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and to demand an end to the freedom with which these crimes are committed. By purchasing a ticket to this production, attendees will be supporting Congolese women and men who are demanding an end to rape. They also will be helping survivors of sexual violence to heal and rebuild their lives and communities. This campaign is being initiated by V-Day and UNICEF, representing UN Action Against Sexual Violence in Conflict.

The Vagina Monologues is an award-winning episodic play which premiered Off Broadway in 1996 and is frequently performed on college campuses. The play is a collection of monologues performed by various women who share their views about their vaginas. In 2007, more than 3000 V-Day events took place in the U.S. and around the world. To date, the V-Day movement has raised over $50 million and educated millions.

Tickets are on sale now and can be reserved by emailing hofstravday2009@gmail.com. Profits from the performances will benefit the Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence, which gives a voice to survivors of domestic abuse by fighting for quicker action against those who commit these crimes. Ticket prices are as follows $10 Hofstra Students, $12 Non-Hofstra Students, $16 Seniors and $20 General Admission.
