Mr. Lethem’s 1999 detective novel, Motherless Brooklyn, won the National Book Critics' Circle Award. His best-selling novel, The Fortress of Solitude, was a brilliant examination of the crucible of adolescence, rock music, superheroes, Brooklyn gentrification and interracial friendships. Mr. Lethem was awarded a MacArthur fellowship in 2005, among his many other prizes.

The program’s faculty include eminent essayist Philip Lopate, writers Eric Brogger and Julia Markus and two Guggenheim Fellows: novelist Martha McPhee and poet Phillis Levin.
