Dr. Sina Rabbany Elected to Top Two Percent of Medical Engineers

Hofstra Professor elected to American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering 2012 College of Fellows

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – Dr. Sina Rabbany, has been elected to the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering’s (AIMBE) 2012 College of Fellows, an annual roster of the nation’s top scientists in the field.  Since 1991, the College of Fellows has led the way for technological growth and advancement in the fields of medical and biological engineering.  

Dr. Rabbany was nominated for this position for his “outstanding contribution to the research and understanding of the role that vascular system plays in promoting functional tissue regeneration and for contributions to bioengineering education” according to AIMBE representatives.  Following his nomination, a board of his peers elected Dr. Rabbany to the 2012 College of Fellows. He will be honored at the induction ceremony, held during AIMBE’s 21st Annual Event at the Grand Hyatt in Washington, D.C. on February 20th, 2012. 

The College of Fellows is comprised of the top two percent of medical and biological engineers in the country. Among the College of Fellows are engineering and medical school chairs, research directors, innovators, and successful entrepreneurs,.  Receiving the organization’s monthly newsletter concerning industry news, internship and employment opportunities will be a among the resources available to Hofstra students as a result of Dr. Rabbany’s election. 

Sina Y. Rabbany is the Jean Nerken Distinguished Professor of Engineering for Hofstra University. He earned a B.S.E., M.S.E., and Ph.D. in Bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania. From 2001-2004, Dr. Rabbany served as the chairperson of the Department of Engineering, and has directed the Bioengineering Program since its inception in 1990. The current focus of his scholarly activities is in the field of cellular and tissue engineering, as applied to the vascular system.  He has published articles on cardiac mechanics, biosensors, leukemia, mobilization of marrow-derived stem cells, and stem cell differentiation into vascular tissue.  Serving on several national engineering boards, this election will be the sixth organization Dr. Rabbany works with.
