Michael Barone, Senior Writer and Columnist for U.S. News & World Report, to Speak at Hofstra
Co-author of "The Almanac of American Politics" to deliver annual Donald J. Sutherland Lecture
Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – Michael Barone, senior writer and columnist for U.S. News & World Report, Fox News commentator and a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, will deliver the annual Donald J. Sutherland Lecture at Hofstra, speaking on "The 2008 Elections: Are Americans Moving to the Left?" on Thursday, March 5, 2009, 2:30-4 p.m., Monroe Lecture Center Theater, California Avenue, South Campus.
The lecture, named for a former Hofstra University trustee who funded the annual event, is sponsored by the Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Department of Political Science, the Center for Civic Engagement and the Peter S. Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency. It is also part of Define '09: New Challenges, New Solutions, a year-long series that will examine the new presidential administration, its policies and initiatives, the challenges we currently face and ways of addressing our country's most pressing issues.

Michael Barone is a preeminent analyst of American politics and public opinion. He is also the principal coauthor of The Almanac of American Politics, a resource one noted commentator called "the ultimate guide for political junkies." Mr. Barone is the author of several books, most recently Our First Revolution: The Remarkable British Upheaval That Inspired America’s Founding Fathers (Crown Forum, 2007); Hard America, Soft America: Competition vs. Coddling and the Competition for the Nation's Future (Crown Forum, 2004; paperback edition, 2005); and The New Americans: How the Melting Pot Can Work Again (Regnery, 2001; paperback edition, July 2006). He has traveled extensively, visiting all 50 states and 435 congressional districts as well as 37 foreign countries.

Mr. Barone served as law clerk to Judge Wade H. McCree, Jr., of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit from 1969 to 1971. From 1974 to 1981 he was a vice president of the polling firm of Peter D. Hart Research Associates. From 1981 to 1988 he was a member of the editorial page staff of the Washington Post. From 1989 to 1996 and again from 1998 to the present, he has been a senior writer with U.S. News & World Report. From 1996 to 1998 he was a senior staff editor at Reader's Digest.
He was graduated from Harvard College (1966) and Yale Law School (1969), and was an editor of the Harvard Crimson and the Yale Law Journal.
Define '09 builds from the success of Educate '08 and Hofstra’s hosting of the October 15, 2008 presidential debate. Educate '08 was launched by Hofstra President Stuart Rabinowitz after Hofstra was named to host the third and final 2008 presidential debate. An estimated 3,500 journalists came to Hofstra from throughout the nation and from around the world to cover the debate, which focused on the economy and domestic issues.
