"Not All Artists Are Starving" – A Night of Networking

Organized by the Hofstra Association for Graphic Arts In Cooperation with the Hofstra Career Center

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY …The student-run Hofstra Association for Graphic Arts (HAGA), in conjunction with The Career Center, is presenting a career networking event titled "Not All Artists Are Starving” – A Night of Networking on Tuesday, March 1, at 6:30 p.m. at the Hofstra University Club, North Campus. The event is open to all students interested in learning about career opportunities within the arts.

Guest speakers include:

Jason Lewis, born and raised in Memphis, TN, moved to New York and attended the School of Visual Arts where he was classically trained in cartooning and illustration. He is also proficient in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. It was at School of Visual Arts that he discovered a proficiency for  storytelling and was drawn to storyboarding and comics. He says, “Now, every piece of art I make tells a story, whether it’s a series of illustrations or a single illustration.”

Luke Delalio started his career as a musician and a recording producer/engineer before moving into directing regional and off-Broadway theater productions. He has taught acting and directing and maintains a private theatre coaching practice in which he specializes in auditioning technique and improvisation. Through his work in theater, DeLalio began photographing actors' headshots and live theatre, dance and music performances. He is much in demand for this specialized type of photography, and his work has appeared in The New York Times, Playbill and Time Out NY, among other publications. He is currently in the MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts program at Goddard College in Vermont.

Karin Sprague resides in the woods of Scituate, RI, where she compassionately designs and hand carves gravestones for families across the United States.

Christina Makrakis is membership manager at the Katonah Museum of Art. She has worked in the Museum's Visitor Services department since 2007 and has also held positions at CUE Art Foundation in New York City and the Hofstra University Museum. She graduated summa cum laude from Hofstra University in 2009 with a B.A. in Fine Arts (concentrated in Painting) and a minor in Spanish.

Aaron Williams holds a BFA from the Maine College of Art and an MFA from Rutgers University.  Since 2002 he has shown his work at venues in and around New York City as well as in Boston, Seattle, Chicago, Philadelphia, Portland, and Berlin. He has had solo shows most recently at Max Protetch and Baumgartner galleries New York as well as at OH+T gallery in Boston.  He has received reviews in the Boston Globe, the Seattle Post Intelligencer and L Magazine in addition to several online sources. In addition to his art career, Williams operates 2112 Frames in Queens, which supplies custom framing, panels, pedestals and display cases to the art industry in New York.

Rodrigo Sanchez has a love for knowledge and design, and taps into these passions to help clients realize their business goals through design and emerging technologies. His creates design elements for clients, as well as marketing collateral, Web sites, social media strategies and other elements of business strategy. He works full-time at Success for Kids, and runs his own design firm, Flight Studio 1. He earned a B.S. in Fine Arts with specialization in graphic design from Hofstra University and continues his studies at Pratt Institute, focusing on Interactive Media.

Mario Bakalov is an adjunct instructor of fine arts at Hofstra University and an art teacher at Valley Stream Central High School on Long Island. He earned both a bachelor of science in fine arts and a master of science in education from Hofstra University.

Linda Graceffo-Vorbach has worked in the advertising/art industry for more than 20 years. She started out in New York City working with advertising agencies and corporations on creative efforts for Dean Witter Reynolds Inc., Doubleday & Co. Inc., BAM, RCA, Lillian Vernon and EAB Bank . She created her own company, Grace Group, which offered consulting services, mostly in Sweden, to the international business-to-business community. Clients she worked with included: Swedish IBM, Dynapac, Siemens Elemia AB, Gadelius, Fläkt, and SAAB 900. She has worked for the United Nations Development Program in Poland as a creative consultant.  Graceffo-Vorbach has supported a dual career as an artist and has had solo exhibitions in Poland and Sweden. She has had her lithographs represented in France, Germany, Sweden, and Switzerland. Presently, she is the founding executive director of Escapade Publishing, LLC, and has published her first book, Fun Family, 1,100 Things to Do With Your Kids on Long Island & Beyond.

Lorena Duran started her career in art in Colombia where she taught graphic design and worked as an independent designer before moving to New York to earn a graduate degree at Pratt Institute. She currently works as associate director of International Design at Christie’s and was part of design studios such as Carbone Smolan, Brandingdang (Colombia) and Imrey Culbert. Some of the most significant projects in her portfolio have been developed for Christie’s Global Markets, Juan Valdez Colombian Coffee, AIGA and The European Art Fair.
