Hofstra Alumnus Returns to Campus

Award Winning Journalist to Speak as part of 75th Anniversary Celebration

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – New York Times sports columnist George Vecsey will return to campus in March as part of the university's 75th anniversary celebration to speak to students about his storied career as a New York Times sports columnist and best-selling author.

Vecsey, a 1960 graduate of Hofstra University, has been a sports columnist at the New York Times for nearly 30 years and has written over a dozen books, including five best-sellers.  He has covered the World Cup and Olympic Games, and is one of the premier baseball writers in the country.

His journalism career began at Newsday, where he was a sports writer for eight years.  He joined the New York Times in 1968, and worked as a national correspondent and a religion writer before he began writing his sports column in 1982.

Vecsey will speak at Hofstra on March 1, 2011 at 3 pm in the Rochelle and Irwin A. Lowenfeld Conference and Exhibition Hall, Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library, 10th Floor, South Campus.  The event is sponsored by the School of Communication.

He has visited Hofstra a number of times over the years to speak to journalism classes, and was awarded an honorary doctorate in 1990.  He was also inducted into the Hall of Fame of the National Association of Sportswriters and Sportcasters in 2001.

This is part of a series of events in which Hofstra University alumni return to their alma mater to speak to students.  Alan Colmes, a graduate from the class of 1971, will also speak on March 16th.

Admission to all events is free.
