Hofstra Students Dance To Educate

Tango for Atanga Dance-A-Thon Raises Money for Secondary School in Northern Uganda.

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra University Schools for Schools Chapter is holding a Tango for Atanga Dance-A-Thon on March 6, 2008 from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. in Hofstra U.S.A. located on the north campus. The goal of the Dance-A-Thon is to raise $1,000 for the Atanga Secondary School, located in the war-torn and poverty stricken region of Northern Uganda, and to also raise awareness of the conditions that exist within the schools of Northern Uganda.

Hofstra’s Schools for Schools Chapter has been working all year to raise money to buy textbooks, make renovations and pay teachers at the Atanga Secondary School as part of a national school competition.  Each participating school is assigned to a cluster and each cluster works to raise money for a specific school in Uganda. At the end of the competition the top fundraisers in each cluster will have the opportunity to send a representative to Northern Uganda next summer on an all-expense paid trip to observe the impact of their endeavors first hand.

“With Schools for Schools we are finally able to give children who have spent a considerable portion of their lives in anguish and terror, a chance,” said Schools for Schools Hofstra Chapter Member Kirsten McKenna. “We are giving these students a chance to be educated in a proper manner so that they realize they are capable of rising above the sources of terror in Uganda.”

The Dance-A-Thon will include music, performances by Hofstra dance groups, a taco bar and plenty of prizes. Some of the raffle prizes include gift cards, Netflix subscriptions, an IPOD, and box seats for a Mets game. The admission price for the event is only $5 and it is open to students and non-students. All proceeds will go straight to Atanga Secondary School in Uganda.
