Hofstra, Prof. Michael D'Innocenzo, to be Honored at Annual Long Island History Day

Annual event that will draw students from more than 30 schools has been hosted by Hofstra for 30 years

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – Hofstra University and one of its longest tenured faculty members will be honored as part of the annual Long lsland History Day program at Hofstra on Sunday, March 8, 2009 from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center, North Campus.

Close to 400 students in grades 7-12 from 30 local schools will compete as individuals or as part of a team in history categories in performance, historical paper, Web site, performance and project. Winners of each category will go on to the New York State finals in Cooperstown and, if successful, to the national competition at the University of Maryland.

Hofstra alumnus and retired Plainedge social studies teacher Richard Marks '63, one of the coordinators of National History Day who founded the New York State National History Day competition in 1979 and first approached Hofstra about sponsoring the local competition, said that about half a million students compete nationally in National History Day competitions.

Hofstra faculty and teachers from local school districts will serve as judges for the exhibits, which in addition to various rooms in the Student Center will be on display on the South Campus in Brower, Hager and Davison Halls.

The award ceremony will take place from 4-5 p.m. in the Student Center Theater. In addition to student awards, Hofstra will be honored for its 30-year sponsorship of the event, and history Prof. Michael D'Innocenzo will be recognized for his long involvement in the program. Prof. D’Innocenzo, the Harry H. Wachtel Distinguished Teaching Professor for the Study of Nonviolent Social Change at Hofstra, is completing his 48th year at Hofstra and last year was named winner of The American Historical Association’s 2008 Distinguished Teaching Award.

"I think the great thing about this is it stimulates students to think creatively about how history matters, not only about what happened in the past but what we can learn about leadership and what we can learn about the forks in the road that may not have been taken," said Prof. D'Innocenzo.

The competition is open to the public. For more information call Prof. D’Innocenzo at (516) 463-5606 or Michael.D'innocenzo@hofstra.edu.
