NEW YORK TIMES MANAGING EDITOR TO DISCUSS FUTURE OF THE NEWS BUSINESS
John Geddes to speak on the impact of the Internet, new technologies and media consolidation
Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY - John M. Geddes, managing editor of The New York Times, will speak on the future of the news industry, including the impact of new technologies and media consolidation, on Monday, March 26, 2007.
The program, sponsored by The New York Times and presented by the Frank G. Zarb School of Business, School of Communication and The Career Center at Hofstra University, will take place in Lowenfeld Exhibition Hall, 10th floor, Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library, south campus beginning at 6 p.m. with a reception for Mr. Geddes. That will be followed by Mr. Geddes' talk at 6:30 p.m. Mr. Geddes will also take part in a question-and-answer period with students from the Zarb School of Business and the School of Communication, and will then take questions from the audience.

The Internet, new technologies and consolidation of the print and broadcast media have all affected how news is gathered and disseminated, and how media companies generate revenue. Mr. Geddes will speak on how The Times has responded to these changes, and how it will continue to do so. A question and answer period will follow.
Mr. Geddes was named managing editor of The New York Times in August 2003, after having been deputy managing editor since September 1997. He joined The Times as a business/financial editor in September 1994. Before joining The Times, Mr. Geddes was the chief executive officer of BIS Strategic Decisions, a market research company acquired by Friday Holdings, an investment partnership, in January 1994. Before that he was a principal at Friday Holdings.
From 1976 until 1993, Mr. Geddes worked in the newspaper industry. Thirteen of those years were spent at The Wall Street Journal in various positions including: bureau chief, Bonn,Germany; deputy managing editor and then managing editor, The Wall Street Journal/Europe; news editor, assistant managing editor, senior editor, and national news editor. He was an economics correspondent in Bonn for The Times from January 1979 until March 1980, a reporter in Bonn for the AP-Dow Jones News Service from January 1978 until January 1979, a New York reporter for AP-Dow Jones News Service from September 1976 until January 1978 and a reporter at The Ansonia Evening Sentinel, Ansonia, Conn., in 1976.
Born in Providence, R.I., Mr. Geddes received a B.A. degree in economics, graduating cum laude, from the University of Rhode Island in 1974. He received an M.A. degree in business journalism from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1976.
