Hofstra Students Spend Spring Break Helping Others

Today In Seattle, 700 – 1,000 Young People Will Have No Safe Place To Sleep

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – For the fifth annual Hofstra Spring Break Alternative Trip Hofstra students will be focusing on meeting the needs of homeless youth and adults in Seattle, Washington from March 27 through April 4, 2010 by spending their time volunteering at soup kitchens, a women’s shelter, youth centers and more.

“The preparations and experience of this trip is a chance for our students to encounter impoverished culture within the United States. This trip is an emotional, mental, and financial commitment as well as a sacrifice of a spring break of leisure and the comforts of home,” said Assistant Director of Student Leadership and Activities Kimberly Rhyan. “The trip is an opportunity for students to practice empathy and experience compassion through service.”

The 12 students attending the trip were required to fundraise for the cost of the trip and attend mandatory training sessions focusing on the topics of friend-raising, compassion, and teamwork.

The group will also host the Silent Art Auction on Wednesday, March 24 2010 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library, East Library Wing 246, North Campus. All proceeds will help the team reach their fundraising goal.
