Hofstra University, Hempstead, N.Y.–  Howard B. Dean III, former Democratic presidential candidate and senior presidential fellow at Hofstra’s Peter S. Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency, will deliver a major policy address for this year’s Arnold A. Saltzman Lecture on the State of the Union.

The lecture will be given on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Helene Fortunoff Theater, Monroe Lecture Center, California Avenue, South Campus. Admission is free and open to the public but registration is suggested. To register, go to www.hofstra.edu/saltzman.

Dean, who continues to be  a potent voice in Democratic politics, will outline what he believes are the nation’s major domestic and foreign policy challenges. This year’s Saltzman State of the Union comes amid continued economic pressures at home, a nuclear crisis in Japan and an increasingly volatile situation in the Middle East, punctuated by U.S. military intervention in Libya.

After the lecture, Dean will briefly take questions from the audience.

The State of the Union Lecture series was conceived of and endowed by Ambassador Saltzman, who has served the government in policy level diplomatic and economic assignments in five U.S.presidencies, including as chairman of the Blue Ribbon Committee on National Growth and Development. He is a Hofstra trustee emeritus.

Governor Howard B. Dean III, is a former Democratic National Committee Chairman, presidential candidate, six term Governor and physician. In 2009, he was appointed a senior presidential fellow with the Kalikow Center. He currently works as an independent consultant focusing on the areas of health care, early childhood development, alternative energy and the expansion of grassroots politics around the world.

Dean began his career in public service in 1982 when he transitioned from a full-time practicing physician to an elected representative in Vermont. Dean served as Governor for 12 years - the second longest serving in the state.

Respected on both sides of the political aisle, Dean was chairman of the National Governors' Association, the Democratic Governors' Association, and the New England Governors' Conference while he served as Governor of Vermont. Dean left office in Vermont to run for President in 2003 where he implemented innovative fundraising strategies such as use of the Internet.

Before entering politics, Dean graduated from Yale University with a B.A. in political science in 1971, and received his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City in 1978. Upon completing his residency at the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont, he went on to practice internal medicine in Shelburne, Vermont.
