Hofstra Honors Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Opening Reception Keynote Address Delivered by New York City Councilman John C. Liu

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – New York City Councilman John C. Liu (D-Flushing) will deliver the keynote address at a reception marking the start of Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month at Hofstra University on Thursday, April 2, 2009 at 5:30 p.m. in the Rochelle and Irwin A. Lowenfeld Conference and Exhibition Hall, 10th Floor, Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library, South Campus.

Councilman Liu was a newcomer to politics when he was elected to the City Council in 2001, the first Asian-American ever elected to legislative office in New York. Since then he has proudly represented the Northeast Queens communities of Auburndale, Flushing, Fresh Meadows, Linden Hill, Queensborough Hills and Whitestone.

In his two terms on the City Council, Councilman Liu has had a distinguished record of achievement. He is Chairman of the Transportation Committee and has paid special attention to the critical role mass transit plays in our city. He is also a strong believer that a quality education is the key to the future of our city and consequently is a member of the City Council's Committee on Education.

“Throughout the month of April there will be numerous opportunities to celebrate and acknowledge the contributions of Asian and Pacific Americans. This year we were very pleased and honored to have Councilman John C. Liu as our keynote speaker,” said Assistant Director of Multicultural and International Student Programs Pam Phayme. “From a compelling conversation about the "Model Minority" stereotype to a "Bollywood" movie night, there's truly something for everyone to attend this month. I encourage everyone to come out, learn something new, and most importantly, have fun during Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month 2009!”

The program is also part of Define '09: New Challenges, New Solutions, a year-long series of programs designed to examine the new presidential administration, its policies and initiatives, the challenges we currently face and ways of addressing our country's most pressing issues.
