Hofstra Departments of Music and Drama and Dance Present April 2008 Performances
Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY … Mark your calendar for the following performances presented by Hofstra University’s Department of Music and Drama and Dance this April 2008. With the exception of the April 25 Hofstra Chorale and Chamber Singers concert at the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Garden City, all tickets are available by calling the Hofstra Box Office at (516) 463-6644. April 11 to 20: Thorton Wilder’s The Skin of Our Teeth, directed by Jean Dobie Giebel. The story of a modern American family as it faces the onset of the Ice Age, the Great Flood and a World War. Celebrating humanity’s will to survive, this Pulitzer Prize-winning play demonstrates that, through resilience and inventiveness, the human race will somehow manage to save itself from the brink of disaster … again!
Performances are Friday, April 11 and 18, at 8 p.m.; Saturday, April 12 and 19, at 8 p.m.; and Sunday, April 13 and 20, at 2 p.m. Location is the Black Box Theater, located at the New Academic Building, South Campus. Tickets are $10, $8 for senior citizens (over 65) or matriculated non-Hofstra students with ID. Members of the Hofstra community may receive one free ticket upon presentation of a current HofstraCard.
April 24 to 27: The Hofstra Spring Dance Concert. Featuring exciting premieres and reconstructions of classic pieces by faculty choreographers and guest artists.
Performances are Thursday and Friday, April 24 and 25, at 8 p.m.; Saturday, April 26, at 2 and 8 p.m.; and Sunday, April 27, at 2 p.m. Location is the John Cranford Adams Playhouse, South Campus. Tickets are $10, $8 for senior citizens (over 65) or matriculated non-Hofstra students with ID. Members of the Hofstra community may receive one free ticket upon presentation of a current HofstraCard. Tickets go on sale April 8.
Department of Music
April 13: The American Chamber Ensemble, Blanche Abram and Naomi Drucker, co-directors. Performers include Blanche Abram, piano; Naomi Drucker, clarinet; Marilyn Lehman, piano; Denise Lozano, flute; Eriko Sato, violin; and Chris Finckel, violoncello. The title of this performance is “Milhaud and Hindemith in America,” featuring important chamber works by both composers. Performance is 3 p.m. at Monroe Lecture Center Theater, California Avenue, South Campus. Tickets are $15, $12 for senior citizens (over 65) or matriculated non-Hofstra students with ID. Members of the Hofstra community receive one free ticket with current HofstraCard.
April 13: Hofstra Jazz Ensemble. David Lalama, director. Performance is 7 p.m. at Monroe Lecture Center Theater, California Avenue, South Campus. Tickets are $10, $8 for senior citizens (over 65) or matriculated non-Hofstra students with ID. Members of the Hofstra community receive one free ticket with current HofstraCard.
April 19: Rhoda Pinsley Levin Award Recital, featuring Hofstra student Jennifer Wells, piano. Performance is 2 p.m. at Monroe Lecture Center Theater, California Avenue, South Campus. Admission is free.
* April 25: Hofstra Chorale and Chamber Singers. David Fryling, director. Featuring a program of accompanied and unaccompanied works for choir from several historical periods. Performance is 8 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Incarnation, located on Cathedral Avenue in Garden City, NY. Tickets are available only through the Cathedral of the Incarnation Office by calling (516) 746-2955. Tickets are $15, $5 for matriculating non-Hofstra students with valid ID. Members of the Hofstra community receive one free ticket with current HofstraCard. Tickets will also be sold at the door.
April 27: Hofstra String Quartet with Alexander Sharpe, violin; Matthew Lehmann, violin; Todd Low, viola; and Benjamin Wolff, violoncello. This concert will feature a program of 20th-century string quartets, featuring Henry Cowell’s no. 5, Michael Tippet’s no. 1, and Charles Ives’ no. 1. Performance is 3 p.m. at Monroe Lecture Center Theater, California Avenue, South Campus. Tickets are $15, $12 for senior citizens (over 65) or matriculated non-Hofstra students with ID. Members of the Hofstra community receive one free ticket with current HofstraCard. Tickets on sale beginning April 8.
