Senior Selected to Perform at Kennedy Center Festival
Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY … Hofstra senior dance major Katherine Mayo has been selected to perform her original choreography, “Augusta Moves,” at the gala performance of the prestigious National College Dance Festival, taking place at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., May 24-27, 2012.
Katherine, a native of Augusta, Maine, explains that this performance, while a great honor, is the culmination of a long process and series of performances, both for Hofstra faculty and later for regional judges from the American College Dance Festival Association (ACDFA). Throughout the fall 2011 semester, students and faculty from Hofstra’s Dance Program met several times to give students an opportunity to show their work and receive feedback. Ultimately, Katherine and another student, Caitlin Sheppard, represented Hofstra at the East-Central ACDFA conference, one of 11 regional conferences. From there, adjudicators selected Katherine’s “Augusta Moves” as one of three pieces to be performed at the national conference in Washington. Selections of works to be performed at the national festival are based on outstanding artistic excellence and merit.
According to the Festival’s website, The National College Dance Festival highlights the outstanding quality of choreography and performance that is being created on college and university campuses.
