The Hofstra University Museum Partners with Osler Society of New York to Present “Revolution, Art, Medicine and Healing”

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra University Museum is partnering with the Osler Society of New York and members of the Narrative Medicine Committee at the new Hofstra North Shore LIJ School of Medicine at Hofstra University to present “Revolution, Art, Medicine and Healing” to a meeting of the Osler Society of New York on Thursday, April 14, 2011 in Emily Lowe Gallery.

“We are pleased to partner with the Olser Society of New York and the new Hofstra North Shore LIJ School of Medicine at Hofstra University as the relationships between the study of art and the study of medicine have a natural synergy in terms of evidence gathering, and visual interpretive skills,” said Executive Director of the Hofstra University Museum Beth E. Levinthal.
   
Featured presentations include Medical Care in the Face of a Disaster by North Shore University Hospital Resident Dr. Alain Berthold, who volunteered his time to treat victims in post-earthquake Haiti. Also featured is a talk by Les and Violet Payne, The Soweto Uprising, Bearing Witness to History, Through Reportage and Art. Also planned for the evening is Traditional Healers, Lessons for Doctors in the 21st Century presented by Dr. Tochi Iroku-Malize, Attending Physician, Southside Hospital.

The evening will also include remarks and presentations by Executive Director of the Hofstra University Museum Beth Levinthal; Museum Education Director at the Hofstra University Museum Nancy Richner and Psychiatrist and Psychoanalyst of the North Shore-LIJ Health System Dr. Shirley Papilsky, who will read a protest sonnet by Dr. Lucien Nochomovitz.

The backdrop for the evening is the Museum’s current exhibition Soweto Art: From the Collection of Violet and Les Payne. Mr. Payne, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, collected art work from Soweto while covering the Soweto Uprising --a series of clashes in June 1976 between black students and residents protesting apartheid policies and the South African authorities -- for Newsday.
