General Barry McCaffrey to Speak at Hofstra

Former four-star general to speak on, Iraq, presidential election

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY - General Barry McCaffrey (Ret.) will deliver the Donald J. Sutherland University Lecture in the Liberal Arts on Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at Hofstra University Monroe Lecture Center, South Campus at 3 p.m.  Gen. McCaffrey will speak about Iraq, foreign policy and the 2008 presidential election. This event is free and open to the public and is sponsored by Educate '08 and Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Science.

Gen. McCaffrey is president of his own consulting firm based in Arlington, Virginia and serves as a national security and terrorism analyst for NBC News.  He is also an adjunct professor of international affairs at the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.   From January 2001 to May 2005, Gen. McCaffrey served as the Bradley Distinguished Professor of International Security Studies. 

The U.S. Senate unanimously voted Gen. McCaffrey the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) director and he served in that role from February 1996-January 2001.  As ONDCP director, he coordinated the $19 billion federal drug control budget and developed the U.S. National Drug Control Strategy.  Prior to his time as the ONDCP director, Gen. McCaffrey served as the commander-in-chief of the U.S. Armed Forces Southern Command, coordinating national security operations in Latin America. During his military career, he served overseas for thirteen years and completed four combat tours.  At retirement from active duty, he was the most highly decorated four-star general in the U.S. Army.
