SUSAN FRELICH APPLETON TO DELIVER HOFSTRA LAW SCHOOL'S SIDNEY AND WALTER SIBEN DISTINGUISHED PROFESSORSHIP LECTURE APRIL 23, 2008

Hofstra University School of Law, Hempstead, NY - Hofstra University Law School has announced that its 2007-2008 Sidney and Walter Siben Distinguished Professorship Lecture, “Parentage by the Numbers: Should Only Two Always Do?” will be delivered by Susan Frelich Appleton, the Lemma Barkeloo and Phoebe Couzins Professor of Law at the Washington University School of Law, on Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at 11:10 a.m. at the Sidney R. Susan Frelich Appleton (A.B., Vassar College; J.D., University of California, Berkeley) is the Lemma Barkeloo and Phoebe Couzins Professor of Law at Washington University School of Law (St. Louis), where she has been a member of the faculty since 1975. She served as associate dean of faculty from 1998 to 2003. Professor Appleton writes and teaches in the area of family law, with particular emphasis on questions of gender, reproductive freedom, and parentage. She has co-authored three editions of the casebook Modern Family Law: Cases and Materials. Her recent publications also include: “Gender, Abortion, and Travel After Roe’s End,” 51 St. Louis University Law Journal 655 (2007); “Presuming Women: Revisiting the Presumption of Legitimacy in the Same-Sex Couples Era,” 86 Boston University Law Review 227 (2006); and “Missing in Action? Searching for Gender Talk in the Same-Sex Marriage Debate,” 16 Stanford Law & Policy Review 97 (2005). Works in progress include a co-authored book on adoption and assisted reproduction and a paper that attempts to integrate sex-positive feminist theory with mainstream family law.

Professor Appleton has been a member of the Council of the American Law Institute (ALI) since 1994, holding the office of secretary of the ALI since 2004 and serving as an adviser for the ALI’s “Principles of the Law of Family Dissolution” from 1994 to 2002. In 2004 she joined the Board of Directors of the American Bar Foundation. Locally, she chairs the Washington University School of Law Faculty Promotions Committee, serves as the School of Law’s representative on the Washington University Faculty Senate Council, and has returned for a 10th year on the Board of Directors of Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis region.

The Sidney and Walter Siben Distinguished Professorship Lecture in Family Law and Torts was established in 1984 and is supported by a gift from the firm of Siben & Siben in Bay Shore, New York. Its purpose is to promote scholarly research, conferences and publications in the fields of torts and family law. Previous Sidney and Walter Siben Distinguished Professorship Lecturers include Hendrik A. Hartog Class of 1921 Bicentennial Professor of the History of American Law and Liberty, Princeton University and Jack B. Weinstein, then Chief Judge, United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
