Hofstra University to Help Beautify Community

University to work with local beautification team to help improve the streets of Uniondale

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – Hofstra University today announced a partnership with the Nostrand Gardens Civic Association Uniondale Beautification Team, in which students will work with the group to plant flowers in order to help beautify the local community and improve the quality of life in Uniondale.

The first event on which the two groups will join together is at 8 a.m. on April 30, 2011.  Approximately 50 fraternity and sorority members will help the group of volunteers by removing the ornamental grass from 69 planters all over Uniondale, and preparing the areas for flowers to be planted.

“We are proud of our students for jumping at the opportunity to make our community more beautiful,” said Anita Ellis, director of off-campus living and commuter student services at Hofstra University.  “This is a fun project and Hofstra is happy to be a part of it.”

"Hofstra has been absolutely wonderful in initiating this partnership.  The community benefits tremendously from the students' energy and can-do attitude, and the students get to know their neighbors and improve the quality of life in Uniondale,” said Heidi Sanft, Co-Chair of the Nostrand Gardens Civic Association Uniondale Beautification Team.  “Our partnership opens up new worlds for all of us, and that's what university learning is all about."

This event prepares Uniondale for another beautification event on May 21, 2011, during which 800 flowers will be planted around the hamlet.

Both events will begin at the northwest corner of Uniondale Avenue and Jerusalem Avenue.  From there, the estimated 75 students and volunteers will disperse around the area to begin the beautification process.
