Progressive Students Union Promotes Hofstra's Second Annual Day of Peace
Hofstra Wears White to Symbolize Peace
Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – Day of Peace, a student organized event to celebrate diversity and coexistence on campus, will take place on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 on Calkins Quad from 11:15 a.m.-12:40 p.m. The Progressive Students Union, which organized the event, requests that everyone wear white or a bright color to symbolize peace.
Day of Peace, which is also part of Educate '08 initiative, will include performances by Hofstra’s Percussion Ensemble, students in the department of dance, Sigma'Cappella, the only co-ed vocal acapella group at Hofstra, and Hofstra Jazz Nonet. Flags will be displayed representing every international student at Hofstra, along with the American flag. Free vegetarian food will be available.
“Day of Peace is a really great event,” said sophomore Izzy Goodman, president of PSU. “Last year was the first year that PSU decided to put it on, and the program was an absolute success. It helped put PSU's name out there and allowed the student body to understand what we are all about. The event is a celebration of our multi-cultural and multi-faceted campus, and a celebration of coexistence.”
PSU, a grassroots action organization that consists of approximately 40 Hofstra students, strives to create social change through education, peaceful activism and charity. They work to create tolerance and awareness on issues relating to race, ethnicity and religion and support human, women’s, gay, environmental and animal rights.
Educate '08 is an unprecedented educational effort that engages not only students and faculty but also the public in a year-long series of conferences, events and lectures leading up to the final
presidential debate at Hofstra on Oct. 15, 2008. For more information on Educate ’08 go to www.hofstra.edu/educate08.
