Hofstra Celebrates A Day of Peace
Hofstra students call for unity and coexistence for a brighter future
Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – Hofstra University students unite to celebrate and raise awareness of global peace with a day of activities and events. On Wednesday, May 9, 2007 Hofstra University’s Progressive Student Union in collaboration with the Office of Student Activities and numerous student groups, will kick off the day’s activities with a Drum Circle featuring Hofstra musicians and professors playing a variety of world instruments, starting at 11:15 a.m.
Following the Drum Circle there will be a Free Speech for Peace opportunity presented by the student group P.O.I.S.E. at 11:35 a.m. This event is a unique opportunity for students to voice their concerns and be in heard in regards to the issue of peace in the world today. At 11:55 a.m. there will be a moment of silence followed by a Parade of Flags, which consist of 20-30 different flags from around the world. Accompanying the Parade of Flags will be the Hofstra Jazz Ensemble directed by Robert Bowen III.
The day will be a celebration and promotion of peace: world peace, peace of mind, amicable peace within societies, and peace for people at war. The Hofstra community is encouraged to either wear white or a bright color to symbolize their support of the Day of Peace.
“Peace is not an individual issue but rather a global, social and cultural necessity.”
