Hofstra Students Compete in Film Festival for $9,000 in Industry Awards

14th Annual Student Film Festival Screenings May13-14

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – Hofstra University’s School of Communication, department of Radio, Television, Film, will sponsor the 14th annual Student Film Festival, in which students will compete for more than $9,000 in industry-sponsored awards.

All of the free film screenings will be held on Thursday, May 13, 2010 at 7 p.m. in the Mack Student Center Theater, north campus and Friday, May 14, 2010 at 1 p.m. in Breslin 211, south campus, and at 7 p.m. in the Mack Student Center Theater. There will be an awards ceremony for the participating students following the evening screenings. All of the films being screened were student produced in Hofstra film courses.

“Although most of the films are narrative, we also have experimental and documentary films. It’s an exciting mix of films in a continuously growing film program,” said Associate Professor in the Radio, Television, Film department Phil Katzman.

As part of the competition, students will be judged by a panel of Hofstra alumni who are currently working in the film industry including assistant cameraman and camera operator Tom Holzer, film editor Rob Smith, and grip and director of photography Luis Colon. The students are competing for awards in Best of Show, first place, second place, third place, Best Cinematography and Lighting, Best Editing, Best Screen Play and Best Director.
