2011 Hofstra University Student Art Show, Presented by the Department of Fine Arts and Art History

Hofstra University, Hempstead, N.Y.: Hofstra’s Department of Fine Arts and Art History presented its annual Student Art Show from May 4-13, 2011 at Calkins Hall. The show featured more than 100 pieces of the finest artwork created by Hofstra students in painting, drawing, 3D, photography, design and new media at the annual Fine Arts Student Art Show.

At the opening reception on May 4, awards were handed out to recognize the finest student art work in a variety of categories. The Outside Juror Award was judged by graphic designer and illustrator Isabel Roxas. Roxas recognized a number of the students in her remarks, including photographer Jeff Weller and Christina Visconti, whose photograph of shopping carts she said, “…was a standout not just for its composition but for the feeling of desolation and ruin that it evoked.”

Roxas continued, “There were also quieter pieces of note. I was particularly drawn to the mood drawings by Emma Kast and Lisa Dalton’s cardboard stool – a simple, elegant solution to a practical problem.”

Ultimately, she announced Eric Harvey as the recipient of the Outside Juror Award. Roxas said, “His body of work showcases both range and great skill. From the hand-drawn exhibition poster to his handheld device research project – he displayed a remarkable consistency, strong conceptual thinking and meticulous attention to detail.”
