The grant covers a period from October 10, 2008 to July 10, 2009.

The Bellmore, Long Island resident also recently won the Outstanding Graduating Senior Mathematics Award and another Mathematics Department award for his work tutoring other students.

Joseph, who intends to apply to medical schools this summer and who minored in biology and chemistry,  said he was searching for a research project that would marry his interests in mathematics and science. He contacted Professor Patrizia Lavia of the University Sapiennza in Rome, who was working with other scientists on mathematical models for Ran-binding protein, which regulates various processes in the human cell including cell growth and cell differentiation. Joseph said the research caught his interest because of its implications for cancer therapies. "I was interested and I wrote up a proposal to work with her," he said.

The Fulbright scholarship will cover his living and travel expenses, he said.

"Joseph was my student in two classes, Introduction to Higher Mathematics, and Number Theory.  He is truly an outstanding young man, who is both talented and hard-working, yet someone who is modest and unassuming.  It has been my pleasure to have in my classes," said Mathematics Chair Marysia T. Weiss, who wrote a letter of recommendation on Joseph's behalf.
