New York Teens Investigate Diversity While Perfecting Their Journalism Skills

Innovative Free Summer Program Funded by The Rauch Foundation

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – Queens and Nassau and Suffolk County high school students will be challenged to investigate and report on some of the important issues facing their hometowns and Long Island as part of a free two-week summer program called the Hofstra High School Journalism Institute (formerly J-Div).  The program is being funded by The Rauch Foundation.

The non-residential program, which begins July 5, 2011, allows ten motivated and promising high school students from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds to be professional investigative reporters. Students will learn basic research and reporting, how to shoot and edit web video, design a web site, use social media for journalist purposes, and other multimedia skills.

The program, taught by Hofstra’s award-winning faculty, will include guest lectures from professional journalists and field trips to professional media outlets such as Newsday and News 12, as well as a trip to the Nassau County courthouse. Once completed, the students’ story packages will be posted on the Institute's website and published in the Hofstra High School Journalism Institute Journal.

“The world is going through some extraordinary changes right now, and it is important to have bright, curious, intelligent young men and women who know how to find the story and bring it home,” said Program Director Peter Goodman. “Our hope for these students at the completion of the program is that they realize what a difference their stories can actually make.”
