WRHU Staff Members Win Multiple National and Local Broadcasting Awards

Students Recognized in Hearst, New York Associated Press Broadcasters and Press Club of Long Island Media Awards

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – Student staff members of WRHU, Radio Hofstra University have been recognized in three journalism awards contests for their on-air work as part of Long Island’s largest radio news staff.

For a sixth consecutive year, student staff members at WRHU, Radio Hofstra University were named top-ten finalists for the Hearst Journalism Awards. On June 6, 2008 Lauren Brookmeyer became the first WRHU staff member to take home a first place prize at the Hearst National Writing, Photojournalism and Broadcast News Championships.

Lauren spent six days in San Francisco, Calif. being judged on her writing, photography, radio and television skills in on-the-spot assignments.  The Hearst Championships were a culmination of the 2007-2008 Journalism Awards Program, with 108 accredited undergraduate colleges and universities competing under the support of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication.  As a first place winner in the National Radio Broadcast News Championship, Lauren received a $5,000 scholarship to use toward her education at Hofstra University.

Lauren also placed first in two categories at the Press Club of Long Island (PCLI) Media Awards for her feature pieces, “A Disney Classic Splashes onto Broadway” and “Long Island Recycling,” for the Radio-Arts category and Radio-Feature category, respectively.  In addition, Kim Saltmarsh was given a first place PCLI award for her feature story, “Global Warming.”  

Lauren also took home a first place win in the Best News Story category in the college competition at the 2007 New York Associated Press Broadcasters Association

(NYSAPBA) television and radio news awards.  Alex Dollin was also awarded two Bill Leaf Memorial Awards for Best Regularly Scheduled Local News Program for his work as producer during WRHU’s daily news program, Newsline.  Brian Bohl received a second place prize for his feature piece, “Point Lookout Wrap” also in the Best News Story category.  Kim and Brian were semi-finalists at the Hearst awards. They each received a $1,000 scholarship.  Brian is a print journalism major while Lauren, Alex, and Kim are broadcast journalism majors within Hofstra’s School of Communication.

WRHU is Long Island’s oldest non-commercial radio station, broadcasting 24 hours a day, seven days a week on 88.7FM and online at www.wrhu.org.  With a staff of more than 175 members, and a program schedule that includes 42 varying formats, the award winning radio station prides itself on pre-professional broadcast training and development. WRHU is an integral part of Hofstra’s School of Communication.

Hofstra University is a dynamic private institution where students can choose from about 145 undergraduate and 155 graduate programs in liberal arts and sciences, business, communication, education and allied human services, and honors studies, as well as a School of Law. With a student-faculty ratio of 14-to-1, our professors teach small classes averaging 22 students that emphasize interaction, critical thinking and analysis.
