Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY … On June 16, 2007, the Saturday Program of Hofstra's Department of Foundations, Leadership and Policy Studies (FLPS) celebrated its end of year ceremony at the Guthart Cultural Center Theater. The celebration honored the incredible work of the students, parents and mentors involved in the program. It also thanked the multitude of people who donated their time and services to the program.
The FLPS Department's Saturday program provides educationally rich opportunities for middle and high school girls from communities surrounding Hofstra University. Girls can be involved in any or all of the offerings, which may include learning to play a musical instrument, increasing their technology skills, participating in reading and writing activities, participating in research that teaches science, math, and writing. These and other activities help the students form positive self-images. These activities are free to the girls and parents, who meet at the University two Saturdays a month during the school year.
Hofstra faculty and students volunteer their time to work on the various activities. High school students from school districts with strong programs volunteer for the program. The June 16 festivities included musical performances, poetry readings and speeches by the students, mentors and staff. Certificates of participation were presented to all the students for their dedication in the program.
The program facilitators were Dr. Charol Shakeshaft, principal director, and Lisa Collet, program director. Instructors included Shreya Subramani (music), Lisa Collet (technology) and Debbie Lo Verde (parent workshops).
