Hofstra Names Research Fellowship for Program Founder and Alumnus Dr. Stanley Shanies

Hofstra University, Hempstead, N.Y. -- As the first medical director of the Physician’s Assistant program, founder of a summer research fellowship, adjunct biology professor and distinguished alumnus, Dr. Stanley Shanies has had a hand in a lot of things at Hofstra.

Now, he’s getting his name on one of them.

In honor of Shanies’ work at Hofstra, the research fellowship that he helped found more than a decade ago has been renamed in his honor. The Dr. Stanley Shanies Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Biological Science provides a $4,500 stipend for students to spend the summer pursuing a research project of their choice.
Shanies, a cardiologist and 1961 Hofstra graduate, launched the fellowship to support high-level medical or biological research among undergraduates.

“Dr. Shanies has contributed to the Hofstra community in many ways, as a physician, a scientist, an alumnus and a teacher,” said Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs Herman Berliner. “Naming this fellowship for him recognizes all that work, and honors what matters most to him – training the next generation of scientists.”

Besides his practice in New Hyde Park, N.Y., Dr. Shanies is an attending physician at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and North Shore University Hospital. During his time teaching at Hofstra, he developed and taught a course on the application of basic science in cardiovascular medicine. He is also on the faculty of Albert Einstein School of Medicine.

 “I was very surprised and deeply honored to learn of the naming of the fellowship after me,” Dr. Shanies said. “As an alumnus it is even a greater honor. Hofstra has been a very important part of my life and I am very proud of the university.”

“I have greatly enjoyed teaching at Hofstra,” he said, “and to think of my name being attached to a fellowship there thrills me more than I can say.”

In 2000, Shanies received Hofstra’s annual Alumni Achievement Award. He has also won the George M. Estabrook Alumni Award for Distinguished Service, and served on the Dean’s Advisory Board for the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.

“Stan has a deeply-rooted connection to this institution,” said Bernard Firestone, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. “This fellowship is a permanent, lasting symbol of that connection.”
