Irwin Kellner to Retire from Hofstra
Nationally known economist will continue teaching at University as an adjunct professor
Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – Dr. Irwin Kellner, Hofstra University’s Weller Professor of Economics, will retire from the University effective August 31. Dr. Kellner has been associated with Hofstra since 1997, where he has taught classes in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Honors College, as well as the Zarb School of Business and was the author of the widely-read Economic Report.“Teaching at Hofstra has been a most enjoyable experience,” said Dr. Kellner, “but the time has come for me to spend more time with my growing family. However, I will continue to teach in Hofstra's highly-regarded EMBA program.”
Adds President Stuart Rabinowitz, “We are sorry that Dr. Kellner is retiring, but fortunate that an economist with Dr. Kellner’s reputation has decided to remain with us as an adjunct professor.”
One of the nation’s best known and most quoted economists, Dr. Kellner will remain as chief economist for North Fork Bank and for MarketWatch.com, the leading interactive financial news Web site. Widely quoted in the print media as well as the author of many articles dealing with economics, business and banking, Dr. Kellner frequently addresses groups of business people and community leaders, and appears regularly on Cablevision's News 12 Long Island, as well as on other programs both here and abroad.
A native New Yorker, Dr. Kellner received his B.A. and M.A. in economics from Brooklyn College and his Ph.D. in economics from The New School for Social Research. He also has a Doctor of Humane Letters bestowed by Hofstra University and a Doctor of Laws conferred by St. Joseph's College. In addition, he is a recipient of the Distinguished Leadership Award from Touro College, the Human Relations Award from the American Jewish Committee, the Humanitarian Award from the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and the Diabetes Research Institute,
the Gary Sherman Humanitarian Award from the North Shore Health System, the Champion of Liberty Award from the Anti-Defamation League and the Distinguished Economic Leadership Award from the Advancement for Commerce, Industry and Technology (ACIT).
Dr. Kellner is one of the few to have been named an Honorary Alumnus of Hofstra University, and recently was named one of the 100 most influential Long Islanders by Long Island Business News. He resides in Port Washington, NY, where he has been a member of the Village Planning Board since 1972.
