HOFSTRA'S "GREAT WRITERS, GREAT READINGS" SERIES LAUNCHES ITS FOURTH YEAR WITH RENOWNED IRISH POET EAVAN BOLAND

Hofstra University, Hempstead, New York ... Internationally renowned Irish poet Eavan Boland is the first guest of the fourth season of Hofstra’s “Great Writers, Great Readings” Series on Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at 7 p.m. The reading will take place at the Lowenfeld Conference and Exhibition Hall, located on the 10th floor of the Axinn Library, South Campus.

Eavan Boland’s books of poetry include Domestic Violence; Against Love Poetry: Poems, a 2001 New York Times notable book; The Lost Land: Poems; An Origin Like Water: Collected Poems 1967-1987; In a Time of Violence; and Outside History: Selected Poems 1980-1990.

Her additional titles include Irish Writers on Writing; a volume of prose titled Object Lessons: The Life of the Woman and the Poet in Our Time; a volume of translations called After Every War; and The Making of a Poem: A Norton Anthology of Poetic Forms, which she co-edited. Forthcoming in 2008 is her New Collected Poems as well as  The Making of a Sonnet: A Norton Anthology, which she is co-editing.

Ms. Boland is the Bella Mabury and Eloise Mabury Knapp Professor in Humanities and the Melvin and Bill Lane Professor for the Director of the Creative Writing Program at Stanford University. She is a recipient of the Lannan Foundation Award in Poetry, an American Ireland Fund Literary Award, the Corrington Medal for Literary Excellence from Centenary College, the Bucknell Medal of Distinction from Bucknell University, the Yale Review’s Smartt Family Prize and Poetry Magazine’s John Frederick Nims Award.

“Great Writers, Great Readings” was launched by Hofstra University in recognition of the importance of writing and literature in a liberal arts education. In addition to a baccalaureate degree in English, Hofstra offers a Master of Arts in English and Creative Writing. The program’s faculty include eminent essayist Philip Lopate, writers Eric Brogger and Julia Markus and two Guggenheim Fellows: novelist Martha McPhee and poet Phillis Levin.

Monday, October 1, 2007, 7 p.m.: Antonio Cisneros, Peruvian poet and novelist who started his writing career with Destierro, regarded among the classics of Latin-American lyric poetry. Location: Leo A. Guthart Cultural Center Theater, Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library, First Floor, South Campus.

Monday, October 29, 2007, 7 p.m.: Kiran Desai, author of The Inheritance of Loss, which received the Man Booker Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award. Location: Leo A. Guthart Cultural Center Theater, Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library, First Floor, South Campus.

Monday, November 19, 2007, 11:15 a.m.: Edmund White, writer and editor of more than 20 books, including Forgetting Elena, Nocturnes for the King of Naples,Caracole and the autobiographical A Boy’s Own Story. Wednesday, February 27, 2008, 11:15 a.m.: Jonathan Lethem, MacArthur Fellow whose novels include Motherless Brooklyn, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award; the best-selling The Fortress of Solitude; and 2007’s You Don’t Love Me Yet. Wednesday, April 9, 2008, 11:15 a.m.: Lynn Nottage, playwright of Intimate Apparel, produced in New York at the Roundabout Theatre Company. The play received numerous awards, including the 2004 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play. Location: Leo A. Guthart Cultural Center Theater, Joan and Donald E.
