Hofstra University Museum's Fall Schedule Features Talk, Tours and Truth

Exhibitions, Receptions, Lectures and Education Programs

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra University Museum will be offering Art and Dialogue, Lectures, Public and Education Programs along with a unique and dynamic exhibition schedule for eager art fans in the Fall 07 schedule.

“The Hofstra University Museum is dedicated to furthering the understanding and enjoyment of the visual arts,” said Beth Levinthal, director of the Hofstra University Museum.  “Through its public programs and educational outreach the Museum helps people make deep and long-lasting connections to works of art, society, and to the varied cultures from which the art works originate.  This fall season of programs is designed to give participants rare opportunities for engagement with renowned artists, art historians, dancers, journalists, and others.”

Below is a list of new programs and their descriptions. Museum members receive free admission or discounts to most programs. ART AND DIALOGUE

Art Talk
This new series stimulates dialogue and discussion. Controversial and cutting- edge issues related to the contemporary world of art and society will be the focus of each evening.  Discussion facilitators for each session will be experts from the fields of visual art, performance art, science, business, politics and more.  Future facilitators are to be announced.  Call for more information and to reserve your place.

The Absolute Truth


The highly regarded Newsweek magazine art critic, and internationally respected artist and painter, Peter Plagens, will facilitate discussion during the first Art Talk evening.  During the spring 2008 semester, Peter Plagens will join Hofstra's faculty as a visiting professor in the

Comparative Arts and Culture Master's program.

Preserving the Past: The Fine Art of Conservation

Hofstra University’s School for Continuing Education and the Hofstra University Museum present this stimulating and informative symposium which explores the fine art of painting, textile and metalwork conservation. Guest presenters are painting conservator Jonathan Sherman; textiles expert Susan Anne Mathisen; and Dr. Ann Feuerbach, anthropologist and archeological conservator.

Fall Garden Tour and Gallery Talk
The morning begins at Emily Lowe Gallery with an insider’s view of our current exhibition American Perspectives: 1907 - 1992 led by Beth Levinthal, museum director. Participants will also be treated to a fall garden tour of the Hofstra campus led by director of grounds, Fred Soviero, who will highlight new plantings, flora and fauna in the arboretum.

Open House
This free event is designed to offer a sampling of the Museum’s programs and educational resources for prospective University class and school group visits.  Faculty and educators in various disciplines are invited to explore how Museum offerings connect to their education goals, and how to incorporate art across all curriculum areas.  Enjoy this special viewing of American Perspectives: 1907-1992, and receive a museum shop discount. Light refreshments will be served.

Family Fun Sundays
These free events allow kids and adults to have fun learning about art during drop-in studio workshops.  All materials are provided, and an artist or educator will help guide participants through the process of making art related to our current exhibition.
