Hofstra Remembers 9/11
Axinn Library’s photo exhibit leads off a week of 10th anniversary remembrance activities
Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY -- To mark the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, Hofstra University’s Department of Special Collections is currently showing an exhibit of 18 photographs called “Hope and Healing” on the tenth floor of the Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library. The display features images of the devastation and destruction in NYC, as well as photos of memorials set up around Long Island and artistic and community projects done in response to the events of that day.
The exhibit, which will run through the month of October, also includes photographs of the daffodil project in Suffolk County and a brick path created in Farmingdale with the names of the 37 Port Authority officers lost that day.
The intended effect of the images is to not only have the viewer reflect on that day, but also propel him or her toward a more hopeful future. “While we shouldn’t lose sight of what happened, the exhibit reminds us how far we’ve come in ten years and the important role that art has played in our healing process,” said Geri E. Solomon, Assistant Dean of Special Collections and University Archivist.
The Axinn Library also has an extensive collection of 9/11 materials that is available to the visiting public. In addition, an online exhibit of more than 500 photographs of 9/11 memorials set up all around Long Island can be viewed at www.hofstra.edu/911collection.
