Hofstra Remembers 9/11

Axinn Library’s photo exhibit leads off a week of 10th anniversary remembrance activities

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY -- To mark the 10^th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, Hofstra University’s Department of Special Collections is currently showing an exhibit of 18 photographs called “Hope and Healing” on the tenth floor of the Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library.   The display features images of the devastation and destruction in NYC, as well as photos of memorials set up around Long Island and artistic and community projects done in response to the events of that day.

The exhibit, which will run through the month of October, also includes photographs of the daffodil project in Suffolk County and a brick path created in Farmingdale with the names of the 37 Port Authority officers lost that day.

The intended effect of the images is to not only have the viewer reflect on that day, but also propel him or her toward a more hopeful future.   “While we shouldn’t lose sight of what happened, the exhibit reminds us how far we’ve come in ten years and the important role that art has played in our healing process,” said Geri E. Solomon, Assistant Dean of Special Collections and University Archivist.

The Axinn Library also has an extensive collection of 9/11 materials that is available to the visiting public. In addition, an online exhibit of more than 500 photographs of 9/11 memorials set up all around Long Island can be viewed at www.hofstra.edu/911collection.      

Several other 9/11-related events are planned on and off campus during the next two weeks:  

Circle of Remembrance -- Thursday, Sept. 8, Friday, Sept. 9 and Monday Sept. 12, 9 AM to 6 PM
Memorial Quad.  Plant an American flag in memory of Sept. 11.  A moment of silence will be observed on Monday at 1 PM.  Sponsored by Hofstra’s Office of Student Leadership and Activities (OSLA).

Remembering the World Trade Center –Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, 12 PM to 2 PM
Netherlands Café, North Campus.   Participate in an arts and crafts project to honor those who were affected by 9/11.  Sponsored by OSLA and the Resident Student Association.

A multi-faith service will follow the project; sponsored by the Interfaith Center.

JCC Manhattan Service Project – Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, 10 AM to 4 PM
Volunteer at the Jewish Community Center (JCC) in Manhattan in honor of 9/11.  Space is limited, so please contact OSLA@hofstra.edu for more information.

September 11th Memorial Service – Monday, Sept. 12, 2011, 12 PM – 12:45 PM
C.V. Starr Labyrinth.  Gather at the site of Hofstra’s 9/11 memorial to remember alumni who were lost.  Afterwards, join a procession to the Circle of Remembrance at Memorial Quad, where participants will observe a moment of silence at 1 PM and plant American flags in unity.  Sponsored by OSLA and the Office for Development and Alumni Affairs.

The 10th Anniversary of 9/11: A Panel Discussion on the Political and Legal Ramifications of September 11  -- Monday, Sept. 12, 2011, 5 PM - 6 PM  Hofstra Law School, Room 308.  The panel will feature Professor Eric M. Freedman, Professor Julian Ku and 9/11 first responder and Hofstra law student  Joe Cammarata  discussing the legal aspects of "The War on Terrorism," which was launched in response to the September 11 attacks.   An introduction by Dean Nora V. Demleitner will honor those who lost their lives on 9/11, including three Hofstra Law alums: Joni Cesta '91, Neil D. Levin '81 and Glenn J. 9/11 Commemoration Panel on Changing American Discourse – Monday, Sept. 12,2011, 6:30 PM 
Cultural Center Theater.  Engage in dialogue as faculty begin the discussion about our country’s state within the global society in which we live.
