The Hofstra Cultural Center Announces the Fall 2010 Joseph G. Astman International Concert Series

Featuring – Latin and Lace, the LI Premiere of Yid Vicious, Marshall Sings Piaf, and A Voyage with Byron Janis

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY … The Fall 2010 Joseph G. Astman International Concert Series has been announced, and it is a very eclectic schedule, sure to appeal to an audience with varied and adventurous tastes.

With the exception of the October 24 Byron Janis concert, which is free, all performances are $19, $17 for senior citizens and matriculated non-Hofstra students; $10 for children under 12. Members of the Hofstra community receive one free ticket upon presentation of a current HofstraCard. Sunday, September 26, 2 p.m.
Latin and Lace
Starring the 12-piece Lou Caputo Not So Big Band,  with guest vocalists Jan Parker, Gregory Gomez, Bob Spiotto, and Loli Marquez-Sterling. A concert featuring Latin jazz standards, big band and other Latin-American classics.
Location: Monroe Lecture Center Theater, California Avenue, South Campus.

Long Island Premiere! Yid Vicious Klezmer Ensemble
An infectious combination of traditional secular Yiddish music with a twist!
Yid Vicious celebrates the longstanding tradition of klezmorim incorporating new musical ideas into an organic and ever-evolving art form. The band’s seven members blend their backgrounds in classical, jazz, and world music genres to create a Klezmer experience.

Marshall Sings Piaf starring Gay Marshall
Gay Marshall’s vivacious and original take on Edith Piaf is far from the traditional perception of Piaf as a tragic icon. Ms. Marshall delivers the original, dramatic repertoire, including her own English adaptations, with stirring authenticity, and not a hint of imitation. Her choice of songs is an exciting mix of the well known and the rare, accompanied by a superb quintet, including piano, accordion and strings. Ms. Marshall contributes personal anecdotes of her research among Piaf’s associates in Paris, as well as hilarious accounts of living among the French, who take their icons very seriously!

A Voyage With Byron Janis – Celebrating the 200th Anniversary of the Birth of Frédéric Chopin starring Byron Janis
Unforgettable music, meaningful words and stirring video provide the background as internationally renowned pianist Byron Janis takes the audience on a special journey exploring the world of Frédéric Chopin. Piano provided by Steinway & Sons.
