Radio Hofstra University Celebrates 20 years with Hofstra's Polka Queen

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY - Grab a dancing partner, kick up your heels, and get ready to polka!  On Sunday, September 30, 2007, WRHU, Radio Hofstra University, will celebrate 20 years of “Polka & Oberek Time,” from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on 88.7FM and www.wrhu.org.

Celebrated as one of the most popular shows on the college station, Polka & Oberek Time brings the local community a variety of Polish music, birthday requests, anniversary dedications, and a calendar of Polish American activities.  

Crowned as the “Polka Queen,” Basia has become a household name at WRHU, where she served six years as the community volunteer liaison and has also co-hosted the FOLIO award winning public affairs show, “Long Island Community Spotlight” for nearly a decade.  The Westbury native has also been known to provide homemade birthday cakes and brownies to all WRHU staff members.  Basia is also an active member of the community, working 25 years at Newsday and serving on the Executive Board of the Polish American Museum.

The “Polka-thon” is an extended edition of Polka & Oberek Time and helps to establish the finest quality of programming available to the local community and helps WRHU maintain its equipment and facilities.  On Sunday September, 30, members of the community are invited to come to the WRHU studios for food, fun, music, and memories.  Those wishing to make a donation may do so my stopping by room 127 Dempster Hall or by calling 516.463.9748 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

WRHU, Radio Hofstra University, is Long Island’s oldest non-commercial radio station, broadcasting 24 hours a day, seven days a week on 88.7FM and online at www.wrhu.org.With a staff of more than 175 members, and a program schedule that includes 42 varying formats, the award winning radio station prides itself on pre-professional broadcast training and development. WRHU is an integral part of Hofstra’s School of Communication.
