"ALL AMERICAN MUSIC" WITH HOFSTRA'S FALL 2008 JOSEPH G. ASTMAN INTERNATIONAL CONCERT SERIES;

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY ... The theme of Hofstra’s Fall 2008 Joseph G. Astman International Concert Series is “All American Music,” to commemorate this year’s presidential race and the Presidential Debate at Hofstra, scheduled for October 15.
                       
All performances are scheduled to take place at Monroe Lecture Center Theater, located on Hofstra’s South Campus off of California Avenue.

Sunday, October 5, 2 p.m.: “Politics and Protest,” featuring legendary folk singer, composer and lyricist Oscar Brand. Also performing are John Foley, guitar; Jordan Brand, bass; and Torrie Lloyd-Masters, guest vocalist. Join us on the musical campaign trail and enjoy some of the most humorous and telling campaign and election songs ever composed (or decomposed for that matter!). Oscar Brand is one of the foremost American folk singers, writer and interpreters of the folk music genre. Selections include “Follow Washington,” “I’m Just Wild About Harry,” “Get On a Raft With Taft,” Irving Berlin’s “Blue Skies with Hoover,” “The Same Old Merry Go Round,” “This Land Is Your Land,” and “Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow.”

Sunday, November 2, 2 p.m.: “On the Stump,” featuring Jeff Newell’s New-Trad Octet. Combining the instrumentation of New Orleans brass band and an electric R&B group, this free-wheeling ensemble combines its infectious rhythm and joyful humor to celebrate the richness and eccentricities of musical politics.

Sunday, December 7, 2 p.m. “Made In America: A Musical Tribute to the Land of Opportunity” featuring Betsyann Faiella, vocals. Accompanied by pianist Shelly Markham and bassist Calvin Hill. America's spirit of individualism, its diversity and humor are expressed through the words and music of an eclectic mix of composers and lyricists. “Made in America” showcases the music of Cole Porter, Randy Newman, Oscar Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Harold Arlen, Bruce Springstein, Sammy Cahn and Julie Gold, among others.

Tickets (per concert) are $18, $15 for senior citizens (over 65) or matriculated non-Hofstra student with I.D., and $10 for children under 12. Members of the Hofstra community receive one free ticket upon presentation of a current HofstraCard.

The International Concert Series was established in 1989 and was appropriately named after the founder of the Hofstra Cultural Center, Dr. Joseph G. Astman. Over the years, audiences have been equally thrilled by world-renowned professionals as well as exciting new young artists ready to burst forth upon the classical scene. This very popular and highly revered series has played various locations on the Hofstra campus and has presented more than 500 professional performers.
