Hofstra's Fall 2010 "Great Writers, Great Readings" Series Begins with Renowned Poet Tomaž Šalamun

Hofstra University, Hempstead, New York ... Poet Tomaž Šalamun is the first guest of the new season of Hofstra’s “Great Writers, Great Readings” Series on Wednesday, October 6, 2010, at 7 p.m. This free reading will take place at Hofstra’s Lowenfeld Conference and Exhibition Hall, located on the 10th floor of the Axinn Library, South Campus.

Slovenian poet Tomaž Šalamun is one of Europe’s most prominent poets and a leader of the European avant garde. He is the author of more than 30 collections of poetry in Slovenian and English. He published his first collection, Poker (1966), at the age of 25. His poetry — which uses elements of surrealism and polyphony — is influenced by the works of Charles Simic and Charles Baudelaire.

“Great Writers, Great Readings” was launched by Hofstra University in recognition of the importance of writing and literature in a liberal arts education. In addition to a baccalaureate degree in English, Hofstra is going to launch a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing in time for the 2011-2012 academic year. Hofstra currently offers a Master of Arts in English and Creative Writing. The program’s faculty include eminent essayist Philip Lopate, writers Erik Brogger and Julia Markus and two Guggenheim Fellows: novelist Martha McPhee and poet Phillis Levin.
