Hofstra Marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month
A Self Defense Seminar, Artistic Expression Workshop, Open Mic Night and Love Presentation
Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – Hofstra University’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a month devoted to raising awareness of domestic violence, features an open mic night, a self defense seminar, a presentation on the impact of media and society on domestic violence and masculinity and an artistic expression workshop.
“Domestic abuse can happen to anyone, anywhere, in any part of the world," said Sandra Johnson, Vice President of Student Affairs. “It is our responsibility as citizens to understand these issues and to strive towards the elimination of domestic violence in our community.”
Domestic Violence Awareness Month was created in October of 1981 by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The objective was to connect battered women’s advocates across nations who were working to end violence against women and their children. Throughout the month there are a variety of events at numerous locations but a common theme that is honored at every event is: “Mourning those who have died because of domestic violence, celebrating those who have survived, and connecting those who work to end violence.”
