(DAI) Career Achievement Award. The award ceremony will take place at their annual “Law Enforcement Night” on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at Leonard’s of Great Neck in Great Neck, New York. Detective Glenn Ciccone, chairman of the Law Enforcement Night committee, will speak about the highlights of Professor Kovar’s career achievements within the Nassau County Police Department’s crime laboratory.

Over the years, Professor Kovar, a resident of Hempstead, has received a number of police service awards for his forensic work. He has attended numerous specialized training classes to keep abreast of new technologies within the forensic science field. He has presented scientific papers at professional forensic science conferences, has moderated or taught many workshops on specialized forensic science methodologies, and has been a television guest to discuss careers in the forensic sciences.

Professor Kovar has been “court qualified” as a forensic expert more than 100 times in the examination of many types of evidence including gunshot residue, controlled substances, footwear and tiretrack impression evidence, hairs and fibers, physical jigsaw-type matches, paint and polymers, glass, and even serological fluids. He has been certified by the American Board of Criminalistics as a Diplomate since 2004 and a Fellow since 2005 in the specialty areas of Hairs and Fibers and Paints & Polymers. He is past-president and a fellow of the New York Microscopical Society. Since 1995, he has been certified by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Service’s Bureau of Municipal Police as a Police Instructor and has taught criminalistics in the Nassau County Police Department’s Police Academy’s Basic & Advanced Investigator classes.

Professor Kovar completed his masters of science degree in Forensic Science from City University of New York at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and has taught forensic science classes at the collegiate level as an adjunct clinical professor at Pace University in New York and as an adjunct assistant professor in Hofstra University’s Chemistry Department.

Hofstra University’s Forensic Science program provides students with a strong foundation in the physical and natural sciences to acquaint them with various aspects of the legal system as they pertain to a forensic scientist. Students have the opportunity to participate in an internship after their junior year in science laboratories, government crime labs or police departments.
