HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY'S CALKINS HALL ROSENBERG GALLERY PRESENTS TEMPORARY PLACES, PAINTINGS BY SHARKA BROD HYLAND

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 14, 2007; OPENING RECEPTION OCTOBER 24 AT 1 P.M.

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY: Temporary Places, a collection of paintings and drawings by artist Sharka Brod Hyland will be on display at Hofstra University’s Rosenberg Gallery at Calkins Hall from October 24 to November 14, 2007.

In the works in Temporary Places, the Prague-born artist explores the psychology of space, which she says is approached very differently by Europeans and Americans. She writes, “American space still amazes me. Perhaps because of its scale, people inscribe their lives in more open, larger gestures. Looking at the satellite images, European places seem to me written in stone, in layers of Roman capitals. I interpret American space as pages of tentative proposals. Some are more assertive, while others resemble doodles and sketches, often crossed-out and redrawn nearby.”

She continues, “I draw spaces from memory. Without documentation, and without initial design. I treat perspective and color in a similar way. Sometimes things don’t make sense. I want to leave room for interpretations, both alternative and cumulative ones.

“I am intrigued by alternative methods of perspectival rendering, and I am attempting to integrate them in a single painting, layering and intersecting seemingly rational spaces with obviously artificial ones.”

Ms. Hyland won a place and was featured in the mid-Atlantic edition of New American Painting.

An opening reception for Temporary Places will take place at Hofstra on Wednesday, October 24, at 1 p.m. Ms. Hyland will further discuss her work with guests and students.
