BALTIMORE CONSORT TO PERFORM MUSIC OF MEDIEVAL SPAIN

Hofstra University Honors College concert to benefit Interfaith Nutrition Network

Hofstra   University, Hempstead, NY - The Baltimore Consort, an internationally renowned early music ensemble, will present a concert at Hofstra next month of music from the Sephardic tradition, dances from Renaissance Spain, and music by Juan del Encina.

The performance, "¡Cancionero! Romances, Villancicos & Improvisations of Spain, circa 1500," takes place on Wednesday, Nov. 8 at 8.p.m. in the Monroe Lecture Center Theater, California Avenue, south campus. The event is sponsored by Hofstra University Honors College.

The concert is free with valid Hofstra ID and $8 for all others. All proceeds from the concert will be donated to the Interfaith Nutrition Network, the Hempstead-based not-for-profit group that provides food, shelter, long-term housing and supportive services throughout Long Island.

Founded in 1980 to perform the instrumental music of Shakespeare's time, the Baltimore Consort has explored early English, Scottish, and French popular music, focusing on the relationship between folk and art song and dance. Besides touring in the U.S. and abroad, they often perform on such syndicated radio broadcasts as St. PaulSunday, Performance Today, Harmonia and the CBC's OnStage. They have also enjoyed many teaching residencies at K-12 schools, as well as at the Madison Early Music Festival and other university engagements.

The Baltimore Consort is Mary Anne Ballard, treble, tenor, and bass viols; Mark Cudek, guitars, recorder, crumhorn, bass viol, and percussion; José Lemos, countertenor; Larry Lipkis, tenor and bass viol, recorders, crumhorn; Ronn McFarlane, lute; and Mindy Rosenfeld, flutes, recorders, crumhorn.
