Show times are 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday; 2 and 8 p.m. on Saturday; and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Tickets are $12; $10 for senior citizens (over 65) or matriculated, non-Hofstra students with I.D. Members of the Hofstra community receive one free ticket upon presentation of a current HofstraCard. As part of Hofstra University’s 75th anniversary celebration, this year’s fall dance concert will feature the University’s full-time dance faculty members – Robin Becker, Stormy Brandenberger, Anita Feldman and Rachel List –  performing together for the first time on the Hofstra stage. Alternating with a student cast, the faculty members will perform “Dancing to Music” by guest choreographer Victoria Marks. Originally created in 1989 for Marks’ own company, this quiet and powerful work has been performed nationally and internationally.

Victoria Marks is a professor of choreography in the Department of World Arts and Cultures at UCLA where she has been teaching since 1995. She is a 2005 Guggenheim Fellow and has received numerous grants and fellowships for her choreography from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts and the London Arts Board, among others. She has also received awards for her dance films including the Grand Prix in the Video Danse Festival, the Golden Antenae Award from Bulgaria, and the IMZ Award. Ms. Marks was recently in residence at Hofstra University where she rehearsed both casts in “Dancing to Music” and also presented three of her dance films to Hofstra’s dance majors.

Also on the program will be new works by Hofstra faculty Niles Ford, JoLea Maffei, Maxine Steinman, and Karla Wolfangle. Mr. Ford’s piece is a commentary on today’s generation and a reaction to the past year’s political turmoil and controversial news events. Ms. Maffei’s piece, “The Call,” features fiery bluegrass fiddle music and authentic old time “hollers” for a reflection on the daily life of a small farming community in the hills of North Carolina in the 1930’s. Ms. Steinman’s piece, set to beautiful and melancholy Portugese Fado music, explores the various ways women are perceived by others as they move through the journeys of their lives. Ms. Wolfangle asks “have you ever had thoughts that played over and over in your mind that you couldn’t get rid of?” That is the topic of her piece, “Static in the Attic."

On Wednesday, November 10, at 11:30 a.m. there will be a Fall Dance Concert Symposium, featuring excerpts from these dances as well as comments from the choreographers. This will take place at Dempster Hall, room 209, South Campus. Admission is free.

The Hofstra University Department of Drama and Dance provides its students with the opportunity to develop and hone their skills as performers, and deepen their appreciation for the arts, on their way to careers in the theater and beyond.  The Dance Program offers two undergraduate degrees: a B.A. in Dance, and a B.S. in Education, Dance Education.
