Hofstra University School of Education, Health and Human Services Presents a 75th Anniversary Conference - Public Health Challenges and Achievements: 1935-2010 Thursday and Friday, November 4th and 5th, 2010

Conference will applaud the successes and underscore the challenges that continue to plague our nation's health.

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY - On Thursday and Friday, November 4^th and 5^th, Hofstra University presents Public Health Challenges and Achievements: 1935-2010.  Since 1935, the year of Hofstra University's founding, tremendous achievements in public health have been made.  The conference will highlight the challenges and advances in public health over the past 75 years.

The conference is presented by Hofstra University School of Education, Health and Human Services, in cooperation with Hofstra Cultural Center, Hofstra University School of Law and the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine.  Faculty, students and alumni, together with other leaders in the fields of public health policy, research, advocacy, education and practice, will examine critical milestones of the last seven decades.  Dr. Irwin Redlener, Hofstra alumni ‘64 and president and Co-Founder of the Children's Health Fund will present The Public Health Response to Environmental Traumas, one of the five conference panels.  The panel will focus on children and the ongoing national and international governmental, humanitarian and medical efforts aimed at improving educational development and opportunities for children and families who have experienced major trauma.  All five conference panels include:

- Changing the Face of Morbidity
- Safety Net Medicine Then and Now: Protecting the Public's Health
- History and Integration of Physical Activity and Fitness Reform
- Advancements in Women's Health and Challenges that Remain
- The Public Health Response to Environmental Traumas

In addition to the panels, other conference highlights are Dr. Vicki Breitbart, President of the Public Health Association of NYC, who will give the opening keynote "Protecting the Public's Health: How the Political and Social Environment Shape our Efforts."  Dr. Margo Wootan, Director of Nutrition Policy at the Center for Science in the Public Interest will give the closing keynote "The Fight of the Century: Taking on Obesity."  Hofstra students will be presenting posters on the conference themes. There will be a moderated viewing of the acclaimed film Unnatural Causes and the closing session will be a discussion by Hofstra faculty entitled, "Hofstra's Commitment to Improving the Public Health."

"The purpose of the conference is to generate constructive dialogue around important historical, current and emerging health science, policy, and practice issues," said conference Co-Director Dr. Corinne Kyriacou, associate professor of Community Health and Assistant Chair, Department of Health and Human Performance at Hofstra University.  Dr. Katie Sell, conference Co-Director and Assistant Professor and Exercise Specialist Program Coordinator at Hofstra added, "we expect the conference to attract a wide and multidisciplinary audience of administrators, clinicians, educators, researchers, advocates and related health professionals, all working on the common goals of preventing disease and promoting health."

All conference sessions will be held at the Leo A. Guthart Cultural Center Theater, Joan and Donald E.
