Radio Hofstra University presents Shrinking Spaces, Rising Voices: the Importance of Community Radio in a Globalized Media World

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – WRHU, Radio Hofstra University will host a community radio panel on Saturday, November 7, 2009 from 1 – 3 p.m. in room 211 Breslin Hall, South Campus.

The panel entitled, “Shrinking Spaces, Rising Voices: The Importance of Community Radio in a Globalized Media World” will celebrate 50 years of educational, public service radio at Hofstra University and will feature professional radio broadcasters discussing why community-driven, educational-based radio is more relevant today than ever before.

The panel discussion will be recorded for a future broadcast on WRHU, 88.7FM and wrhu.org.  Audience members are encouraged to take part in the question and answer session following the discussion.  For more information about this panel, please call (516) 463-6062.

Program panelists include:

Joel Meyer: Associate Producer of "Soundcheck," WNYC-FM Radio's talk show about music and the arts. He previously worked for Air America Radio's "The Al Franken Show," and WRHU-FM.

Garry Armstrong: Three-time Emmy Award winning broadcast journalist, with a career spanning more than four decades. He began his career at WVHC-FM (now WRHU-FM) and has worked at ABC network and in major markets including more than 30 years at Boston's NBC-TV affiliate.
 
Esther Armah: As a New York radio host, she can be heard on WBAI-FM’s “Wake Up Call” from 6-8 a.m., Monday through Thursday and “Off The Page,” a one hour multi-media show about the world of books. In London, she worked with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) as an investigative reporter, a documentary maker and a radio host across BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio 5-Live, and BBC World Service.

Bruce Avery: General Manager of the award-winning WRHU-FM.  He has produced local radio and television programming since 1978 and is a broadcast meteorologist for News 12 Long Island.

Moderated by Mario A. Murillo: Associate Professor and Chair of the Radio, Television, Film Department of Hofstra University.  Mario is veteran radio journalist and feature producer. He has worked in commercial, public, community, and university radio for 25 years, and is executive producer of WRHU-FM’s morning drive news and public affairs show, Hofstra’s Morning Wake Up Call. A Fulbright Scholar, he has written extensively about the role of citizen’s media in broadening the public sphere and increasing civic engagement, both in Latin America and here in the United States.

WRHU, Radio Hofstra University, is Long Island’s oldest non-commercial radio station, broadcasting 24 hours a day, seven days a week on 88.7FM and online at wrhu.org.  With a staff of more than 175 members, and a program schedule that includes 42 varying formats, the award winning radio station prides itself on pre-professional broadcast training and development. WRHU is an integral part of Hofstra’s School of Communication.
