Monter, a 1976 graduate of Hofstra Law School and executive vice president of the Westbury-based Holiday Organization real estate developers, was named the new chair of Hofstra's board of trustees at last month's meeting, President Stuart Rabinowitz announced today.

"Marilyn Monter is a longtime supporter of Hofstra and has served on the board of trustees for many years," President Rabinowitz said. "Her business acumen has helped guide our decisions on Hofstra’s continuing growth and her generosity to the University has ensured that Hofstra can continue to attract the best students and faculty to our campus."

"I am very honored to have been chosen as chair of Hofstra University's Board of Trustee," Ms. Monter said. "These are very exciting times for the University, having just hosted the presidential debate, and the continuing educational program, Educate '08; the establishment of the medical school; and the successful completion of the Capital Campaign, to name a few of the recent accomplishments.  I look forward to working with the board and the administration to build on the positive momentum and continue to move Hofstra to the forefront of higher education."

Ms. Monter, a Syosset resident, succeeds John D. Miller as chair of the Board of Trustees. Mr. Miller will remain on the board as a trustee.

A member of the Board of Trustees since 2003 and most recently board secretary, Ms. Monter is a 1976 graduate of Hofstra School of Law. Prior to joining Holiday Organization she was an attorney with Allied Corporation in Morristown, New Jersey and served as assistant dean of Hofstra School of Law from 1976-1978. She received a B.A. from the University at Albany in 1973.

Ms. Monter also serves on the boards of North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System, Suffolk Y Jewish Community Center, Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, Planned Parenthood of Nassau County, Elmezzi Graduate School of Molecular Medicine, and the Interfaith Nutrition Network
