Hofstra PA Students win Statewide “Medical Jeopardy” Contest
Will compete for national title in May 2012
Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY -- A team of Hofstra students have won bragging rights as New York’s sharpest physician assistant students after clinching as 2011 champions in the New York State Society of Physician Assistants (NYSSPA) “Medical Jeopardy” competition.
The championship question described the following case study: A 60-year-old man has symptoms including fever, malaise and chest pains two weeks after he suffered a heart attack. He is suffering from…
The answer? What is Dressler’s Syndrome.
The three-student team from Hofstra’s Physician Assistant Studies Program – Jason Wieland, Edward Wansor and Jaclyn McQuade – won out over PA programs from nine other colleges and universities in the state, including St. John’s University, Pace University, Stony Brook University, Albany Medical College, Weill Cornell Medical School, New York Institute of Technology and SUNY Upstate Medical University. It is only the second year the Hofstra team has competed.
“Hofstra never competed until last year, so we are especially proud,” said Theresa Horvath , director of the Physician Assistant Studies program.
The team will travel to Toronto in May 2012 to represent New York State in the national “Medical Jeopardy” competition.
