HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR AND PH.D. PROGRAM RECOGNIZED BY INTERNATIONAL AWARD

Dr. Mitchell Schare and the Ph.D. Program in Combined Clinical and School Psychology to Receive Top Honors from the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY … The Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT) will recognize Hofstra University's Department of Psychology with two distinguished honors at its 41st annual convention in Philadelphia, November 15 through 18. Hofstra's Ph.D. Program in Combined Clinical and School Psychology will be named Outstanding Training Program for 2007 and the doctoral program's director, Dr. Mitchell Schare, will receive the award for Outstanding Service to the ABCT organization.

The Outstanding Training Program award is given to a training program that has made a significant contribution to training behavior therapists and/or promoting behavior therapy. Training programs can include graduate (doctoral or master's), predoctoral internship, postdoctoral programs, institutes, or continuing education initiatives. Over the years some 800 students have successfully completed the Hofstra Ph.D. program and are gainfully employed as clinical, school, or academic psychologists in 25 different states and in a number of foreign countries. Hofstra's Ph.D. program in Combined Clinical and School Psychology has been continuously accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) since 1973. Just this year it has been modified to be a Ph.D. Program in Clinical Psychology.

The Outstanding Service to ABCT award is presented to a person who has actively demonstrated exceptional dedication, persistence, excellence, and rigor regarding the association's operation and activities. For nearly 30 years, Dr. Schare has been an active participant in all aspects of the ABCT organization.  As an active researcher he has presented numerous papers, symposium and panel discussions at annual conventions. Dr. Schare has participated upon and headed up many organizational committees over the years involving membership and program activities. He has been the Association's top membership recruiter for many years, founded and edited a column for the ABCT newsletter and inspired the organization to preserve the history of Cognitive-Behavior Therapy through an organized series of interviews of the founding psychologists for this important therapeutic modality. Currently, Dr. Schare is the Membership Issues Coordinator for the organization.

ABCT is a not-for-profit international membership organization that was founded in 1966. Its membership consists of psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, physicians, nurses, and students who study, practice, and/or conduct research in cognitive-behavior therapy. ABCT serves as a centralized resource and network, enhancing public awareness of cognitive behavior, therapy, disseminating knowledge, and promoting research.
