Hofstra University Hosts the Third Health Policy Breakfast

"National Health Reform and Protecting the Region's Health"

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY - The third Hofstra Health Policy Breakfast lecture titled "National Health Reform and Protecting the Region's Health," will be held on Friday, November 20, 2009 featuring representatives from New York City, Nassau and Suffolk county health departments.  The breakfast lecture, sponsored by EmblemHealth, will be at the Hofstra University Club, David Mack Hall, North Campus from 8 -10 a.m.

The discussion will address how various health care reform proposals could impact the ability to protect the public's health.  Issues such as access to care for the uninsured, underinsured and special populations such as undocumented immigrants, as well as Medicaid funding formulas and prospects for improved coverage of preventive services, will be discussed.

The panelists are: Louise Cohen, MPH, Deputy Commissioner, Division of Health Care Access and Improvement, New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene; Dr. Daniel Kuhles, MD, MPH, Director of Disease Control, Nassau County Department of Health and Dr. Greg Pigott, MD, MPH, Director, Office of Minority Health, Suffolk County Department of Health Services.

 "A lot of health issues that confront us are regional issues and we should be learning from each other's experiences," said economics Professor Rachel Kreier, Ph.D. "This is a great opportunity to think about the interaction between federal and regional health policies as we prepare for the March conference, ‘New Directions in American Health Care: Innovations from Home and Abroad.'"

The three-part Health Policy Breakfast Series was established to set the stage for the "New Directions in American Health Care: Innovations from Home and Abroad" Conference Hofstra University is hosting March 11 and 12, 2010. 

The Hofstra University Health Policy Conference Planning Committee is composed of Dr. Corinne Kyriacou (Community Health), Janet Dolgin, Ph.D., J.D. (Law) and Rachel Kreier, Ph.D. (Economics).

Additional sponsors for this breakfast are Define ‘09, Hofstra's School of Education, Health and Human Services, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the School of Law.  Approximately 100 invited guests and Hofstra administrators participating in the breakfast lecture series will be attending.
