HOFSTRA CELEBRATES MIDYEAR COMMENCEMENT 2006
December 21, 2006 at 7:30 p.m.; Honorary Degree Recipient and Guest Speaker Is NYS Lieutenant Governor Elect David A. Paterson
Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY: New York State Lieutenant Governor-Elect David A. Paterson, a graduate of Hofstra Law School, will address Hofstra's midyear commencement at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex at Hofstra University on Thursday, December 21, 2006 at 7:30 p.m. The complex, formerly known as the Arena, is located on the University's North Campus
Approximately 700 Hofstra undergraduate, graduate and School of Law students will celebrate midyear commencement with an estimated 4,000 family members, friends and members of the Hofstra community.
Lt. Governor-Elect Paterson, currently a state senator, will be the first African-American to hold that office. Throughout his political career he has broken barriers, demanded change and passed legislation on behalf of disenfranchised and disadvantaged New Yorkers.
In 1985 at the age of 31, he was elected to the New York State Senate, representing the 30th State Senate District, which encompasses Harlem, East Harlem and the Upper West Side. In November 2002 he was elected Senate Minority Leader, thereby becoming the highest-ranking, African-American elected official in New York State and the first nonwhite legislative leader in Albany's history. His invitation to address the 2004 National Democratic Convention, as well as his selection to address the U.S. Conference of Mayors that same year, recognized the scope of his work.
Hofstra University is a dynamic private institution where students find their edge to succeed in more than 140 undergraduate and 150 graduate programs in liberal arts and sciences, business, communication, education and allied human services, and honors studies, as well as a School of Law. Our professors teach small classes averaging 25 students that emphasize interaction, critical thinking and analysis. Hofstra offers a faculty whose highest priority is teaching excellence, cutting edge technology, extensive library resources, internships and special educational programs that appeal to their interests and abilities. The Hofstra community is driven, dynamic and energetic, helping students find and focus their strengths to prepare them for a successful future.
